Cut from soft cornflower blue opalescent glass, this sitting elephant is made entirely by hand using the Tiffany copper foil method. Each segment is individually shaped, wrapped in copper foil, and joined with silver solder, giving the piece

its fine bright lines and quietly individual character. The small tusk is cut from pale opalescent glass - a detail that takes its own careful fitting.

Opalescent glass doesn't let light pass straight through the way cathedral glass does. It holds the light and glows from within - milkier and softer, closer to sea glass than to a church window. In a sunny spot it takes on a warm luminosity; on overcast days it settles into a calm, steady blue.
